Background Metropolitan (metro) transport networks must support numerous service demands, from low-rate DS-1/T1, DS-3/E3, 10/100BASE-T, and OC-3/STM-1 to higher-rate OC-12/STM-4, Gigabit Ethernet, OC-48/STM-16, OC-192/STM-64, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet services. As broadband data services are being widely adopted and Ethernet is becoming a basic protocol, service providers need more and more integration between Ethernet switching and transport to optimize capital investment and minimize operating costs.
